Privacy Policy
CastLog is a privacy-first fishing journal built by an angler, not a data broker. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it. In plain English wherever we can manage it.
Who we are
CastLog ("we," "us") provides the CastLog mobile app and the castlogapp.com website. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at anthony.smith1760@gmail.com.
Information we collect
- Account information — the email address you use to create an account and sign in.
- Your fishing data — catches you log (species, size, notes, date/time), photos you attach, and the spots and locations you choose to save.
- Location — when you save a spot or log a catch with a location, we store the coordinates you attach. Location is used to power your journal, spots, and lake/pattern features — not to broadcast where you fish.
- Usage and diagnostic data — anonymised analytics about how the app and website are used (for example, which features are opened and crash/error information) so we can fix bugs and improve the product.
How we use your information
- To provide the core app: storing your journal, syncing your catches across your devices, and powering features like spots, Fish ID, Bite Coach, and AI pattern intelligence — see "AI features and third-party AI providers" below for exactly what these send to outside providers.
- To keep your account secure and authenticate you when you sign in.
- To understand which features help anglers and to fix problems, using aggregated and de-identified usage data.
- To respond to your support requests.
Your spots are private by default
CastLog has no public social feed. The spots and locations you save are private to your account by default and are not shared with other users or shown publicly. Your best water took years to find — we're built so it stays yours.
How your data is stored
Your account and fishing data are stored on secure cloud infrastructure and synced to your devices. We use reputable third-party providers to host data, sign you in, and measure product usage. These providers process data only to provide their services to us, and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. For the AI providers we use to power features like Fish ID and Bite Coach, see "AI features and third-party AI providers" below.
AI features and third-party AI providers
CastLog uses several AI-powered features — Fish ID, Bite Coach, Voice Log, Water/Spot Scan, Tackle Scan, Gear Label Scan, and the Lure Image Generator — to speed up logging and give you smarter recommendations. Using any of these features sends the data described below to a third-party AI provider so it can generate a response. That data is sent only when you actively use the specific feature — CastLog does not send your data to these providers continuously or in the background, and AI processing happens on these providers' servers, not on your device.
- Fish ID — sends a photo of your catch to Anthropic (Claude), via OpenRouter, to identify the species.
- Bite Coach — sends your chat messages, any photos you attach, your profile info (name, home region), saved lake locations, GPS waypoints, catch history, live location, weather/solunar data, and tackle box contents to Anthropic (Claude), via OpenRouter, to generate personalized fishing advice.
- Voice Log — sends your audio recording to OpenAI (Whisper) for transcription, then sends the resulting text transcript to Anthropic (Claude), via OpenRouter, to fill in your catch details.
- Water/Spot Scan — sends a photo of the water or shoreline to Anthropic (Claude), via OpenRouter, to assess the spot.
- Tackle Scan — sends a photo of your tackle box or lures to Anthropic (Claude), via OpenRouter, to identify your gear.
- Gear Label Scan — sends a photo of a gear package or label to Anthropic (Claude), via OpenRouter, to read the label.
- Lure Image Generator — sends your text description of the lure to Google (Gemini), via OpenRouter, to generate an image.
OpenRouter is the routing service CastLog uses to send these requests to Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google — it does not use your data for its own purposes beyond delivering the request and returning the response. As with our other service providers (see "How your data is stored" above), these AI providers process your data only to return a result to CastLog. We don't sell this data, and we don't use it to build advertising profiles or serve ads.
Each provider is bound by its own privacy policy: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and OpenRouter.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your personal data to anyone.
- We don't share your saved spots or catches publicly or with other users.
- We don't run third-party advertising networks inside the app.
Photos and metadata
Photos you attach to a catch are stored with your journal so you can see them across your devices. We do not publish your photos or their location metadata to a public feed.
Analytics and the website
The castlogapp.com website uses standard analytics (Google Analytics) to understand aggregate traffic, and the app uses product analytics to understand feature usage. This data is used in aggregate to improve CastLog and is not used to build advertising profiles about you.
Your rights and choices
- Access and correction — you can view and edit your catches and spots directly in the app.
- Deletion — you can request permanent deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing anthony.smith1760@gmail.com from your account email. We'll confirm once it's done.
- Location control — you control whether to attach a location to a catch or spot, and you can manage location permissions in your device settings.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we permanently delete your associated fishing data, except where we're required to retain limited records to comply with legal obligations.
Children's privacy
CastLog is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as CastLog grows. When we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
